Anyone playing the ” Old ” course will always remember hole number 10. a par 5, dog-leg right that snakes around an enormous lake, that is 557 yards round the lake or 240 yards by the ‘ direct ‘ route. Not for the feint-hearted.

The course is separate from the Old ( 18 hole ) Course of Phuket Country Club

Possibly one of the best nine hole layouts in Asia. This course was rated recently by Asian Golf Review magazine as the best in Phuket. The Club recommends that only those holding handicaps lower than 24 should play this course. (Although it is open to all. )

Not for the ‘ Hacker ‘ this beautiful, challenging course will test your accuracy and skill

Water comes into play on seven of the nine holes. ” I don’t count my score, I count the balls I lose ” says Brian Anderton a local ex-pat member.

When all the other courses are busy you can almost have this one to yourself. It has the least amount of play as most golfers think little of 9 hole courses. The reward is that there will be no regrets if you tackle this monster.

Hole #10, 557 yards par 5, is one of the most unusual hole you will find anywhere; a dog-leg right that snakes around an enormous lake and reachable in one! ( for the big hitters )

To achieve it, you must aim 90 degree right of the fairway – and be able to carry you drive 240 yards over the water. See layout hole #10 diagram. The course is fun and friendly. Set in a valley, the fairways meandering through the hills and limestone cliffs.

Old CourseYou will traverse 3 distinct environments:- six holes in undulating hills, six holes on the level and six holes through landscape forest.

It is generally not humiliating or intimidating (depending on your temperament, of course!). Wayward shots are not too severely penalized; just stay away from the ‘vertical-cliff’ wall bunkers guarding strategic Greens.

Although high handicappers have the best round of their lives and keep coming back for more, the low handicap golfers still find the course quite a challenge.

Hole 1

A relatively gentle, par 4 to open your round.. The long hitters can hit the ball left over a ravine leaving a good view of the green for the approach shot. The more conventional play is to the right of the fairway, just left of the trees, leaving a short but blind shot to the green.

Hint from the Pro. Use one club less on your approach shot as most will bounce forward on to the green.

Hint from the member. The road is not a bad shot as you can sometimes get a favorable bounce and a free drop if your ball lands on the road. The fairway to the right, #9, is in play.

Hole 2

Picturesque, short, par 3 . Downhill to a small green. Most players are reaching for their wedge here after their tee shot.

Hint from the Pro. The wind is a cause for concern on this hole, as much as two clubs.

Hole 3

A double dogleg right that snakes round the condo. The big hitters will cut the corner over the trees, which are getting higher every year, and try for the green in two.

Hint from the Pro. Mid iron off the tee, over the trees- cut the corner with your second shot and a short iron to the green,

Hole 4

Deserving its H.S. rating #1. this difficult par 4 will test the skill of the most experienced golfers. Alignment is very important. Big hitters should be careful not to go through the fairway. Don’t be too greedy. Mid to high handicappers should treat this hole as a par 5.

A beautiful par 3. Inviting bunkers short left. The green has some severe breaks- be careful on short puts,

Hole 6

Quite a climb to the elevated tee on one of the most beautiful holes on the course. Narrow fairway, OB left. The fairway to the right, #8, is still in play. Alternate greens. The green on the right slopes severely from back right to front left. The green on the left is fast from back to front.

Hint from the member. If you land on the fairway of hole # 8 play your second shot up the fairway of # 8 to the marker , this will leave you a shot to the green.

Time for a drink stop, the flight in front usually don’t move until the hear you climbing the steps.

Hole 7

A dogleg right over the bunkers. The green has three levels and slopes from left to right.

Putting is very difficult on this green. Don’t feel too bad if you three put.

Hole 8

A long, slight dogleg left par 4. No OB to worry about. A small green. Anything short will not run on so you must carry your approach shot to the green.

A bogey is a good result here.

Hole 9

A long straight par 5, reachable in two by the big hitters. A lot of bunkers are just waiting for the less than accurate second shot.

Hint from the Pro. Target off the tee is over the tree to the right of the fairway.

Hint from the member. Be aggressive off the tee and conservative near the green.

Time for a drink stop and to reflect on the first nine.

Hole 10

This is the hole you will remember. Something very unusual- a par 5 that the green can be reached in one. All you need is an accurate 240 yard tee shot. Have a look at the surface of the lake to get an idea of the wind, To try or not to try, that is the question. Go for it. If you find the water there is a drop zone over the bridge and you can still walk away with a bogey.

Hole 11

A dogleg left par 4. Big hitters can cut the corner over the bunker on the left. High handicappers should keep to the right of the bunker and be aggressive on their second shot to a big green, bunkers to the right.

A straight par 4. Narrow landing area. The narrow green is well protected with bunkers all round.

Hint from the member; Lay up with your second shot and chip it close, below the hole for an uphill put.

Hole 13

Time for the ‘big one ‘ again. A long par 4, easy for the big hitters. If you hit the power lines, play the shot again without penalty. The fairway falls away to a lateral water hazard on the right. Keep to the left of the big tree.

Hint from the member; The rough on the left is better than the water on the right.

Time for a drink and a piece of chicken to keep you going for the run in.

Hole 14

A good par 3 . Trouble on the left so aim to the right of the green.

A big green that slopes from back to front. Very slow putting uphill. If you get away with two puts here give your self a high-five.

A long par 4 H.S. 2. . OB right but plenty of room on the left. Not many reach the green in two . Note the hole position, as this green is 50 yards long. The lone tree in the middle of the fairway is 70 yards from the front of the green.

Hint from the member ; Lay up on your second shot. Three on , three puts is not unusual here.

Hole 16

A very ‘ pretty’ hole is the best way to describe this hole. Big hitters beware, there is water before the green, a 250 yard drive may find it. A very tricky green depends on the pin placement.

Hint from the Pro; hit a 200 yard tee shot, leaving a 120 shot to the green.

Hole 17

Although hole number 10 gets the publicity this is the signature hole. Play it as you see it.

A par three to an island green that is 54 yards long.

Hint from the Pro ;Wind is a big factor here.

Hint from the member ; Keep it dry. Don’t be too greedy. Find the green and rely on you putting.

Hole 18

A classic par 5 closing hole. H.S. 18?. A good drive off the tee with a fade ( for the right- handers ) will put you in position to go over the creek leaving an uphill third shot to the green . Aim for the right of the green. As the fairway is easy the green is difficult. The hardest putting green on the course, Not many get away with only two puts.
